Zone by zone, what carriers and CAL FIRE inspectors check on a foothill property — and the items most homeowners miss.
Non-renewal letters rarely explain what would have passed. They cite a standard and leave you to guess. Across the foothill properties we clear, the failures cluster in the same handful of places.
Zone 0: the first five feet
This is the zone that saves houses and the zone homeowners resist most, because it usually means removing the foundation planting they like.
- No bark mulch touching siding — switch to gravel or bare mineral soil
- No shrubs, vines, or trellises against the wall
- Nothing stored under decks or stairs
- Gutters and roof valleys cleared of needles
Zone 1: five to thirty feet
The goal is breaking the ladder: nothing that carries fire from the ground into a canopy.
- Limb trees up six feet, or one third of height on young trees
- Remove shrubs growing directly beneath tree canopies
- Keep firewood stacks outside thirty feet
- Trim branches within ten feet of the chimney
Zone 2: thirty to one hundred feet
Thinning, not clearing. Space canopies and reduce surface fuel while keeping enough tree cover to hold soil. On slopes, the required distance extends well past one hundred feet.
Document everything
